What Is Wicca?

Wicca, sometimes referred to as witchcraft, is a neopagan, earth-based religion. Neopaganism describes a group of religions that derive from ancient pagan religions. According to Silver Ravenwolf, author of TeenWitch: Wicca for a New Generation, "witchcraft is a nature based, affirming religion that follows a moral code and seeks to bring harmony among people, and empower the self and others."

There are various Wiccan traditions that embrace a wide variety of beliefs and practices. These include Gardnerian Witchcraft, Alexandrian Wicca, Dianic Witch Craft, Celtic Wicca, Georgian Wicca, and Discordianism. However, the distinct principles of Gardnerian Wicca, founded by Gerald B. Gardner in the 1940's, seem to form the basis of most of the Wiccan traditions. These principles include:

-- Everyone has the divine (or goddess) within

-- One should develop natural gifts for divination or occult magick

-- Divine forces or nature spirits are invoked in rituals

-- The Goddess, as either a symbol or a real entity, is the focus of worship

-- Nature and the earth are sacred manifestations of the Goddess

-- Everyone has his or her own spiritual path to follow

-- Rituals and celebrations are linked to the seasons and moon phases

-- Meditation, visualization, invocation, chanting, burning candles, and special rituals trigger a sense of the mystical, thus reinforcing the core belief system.

Charles Leland and Margaret Murray also played a role in the development of neopaganism. Modern- day Wicca's roots can be traced back to their writings.

Wiccans believe that all matter has a universal force. They support peace and revere nature. The ultimate goal is to be in harmony with nature in order to foster a peaceful existence. Wiccans believe that peace cannot be achieved if they are not in sync with nature. Wiccans also believe that the universal force which exists in all matter can be manipulated through an act of will. This belief is the basis for Wiccan magic.

The deity worshipped by Wiccans is both male and female; therefore, Wiccans honor both the god and goddess. Most Wiccans worship the Great Goddess and Her consort, the Horned God. Some Wiccan traditions place more emphasis on the Goddess. Yet, others do not emphasize the existence of any one predominant deity.

Wiccans celebrate eight holiday sabbats which fall on the solstices and equinoxes and on the four "cross quarter days" on or about the first day of February, May, August, and November. Many Wiccans also celebrate esbats during particular phases of the moon.

What Wicca Is Not

Many people have the mistaken belief that Wicca is satan worship and the Christian church has identified Wicca with satanism. However, Wiccans do not believe in satan or the devil or any other supernatural force of evil. Wiccans view satan or the devil as a Christian construct which Christians juxtaposed against Jesus Christ.

Wiccans do not practice black magic, but rather white magick witchcraft. [4] Because Wiccans do not believe in hurting people, killing animals, taking drugs, or stealing, they use magick only to help themselves, but never to harm or manipulate others.

Nor is Wicca a cult. Wiccans do not believe in trying to convert others to Wicca. They do not believe that one person, a leader, should exercise control over another, as is generally the case with cults.

What is the Wiccan Rede?

The Wiccan Rede is a tenet by which all Wiccan live. The Rede states, "And it harm none, do as ye will". Essentially, this means as a Wiccan, a person can do anything he'd like as long as it doesn't hurt anyone, including himself.

Wiccans also believe in karma or what they call the threefold law which states that whatever a person does, whether good or bad, will come back to them threefold. So Wiccans always consider the consequences before taking action.

The Rising Popularity of Wicca

Wicca and witchcraft have become very popular among teenagers and young adults. Some believe this rise in popularity is due, in part, to the portrayal of witches on television and in the movies. Movies like The Craft and Practical Magic and television shows like Charmed, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Sabrina, The Teenage Witch served to create an interest in witchcraft among young people.

Others believe that teenagers and young adults, who consider themselves environmentalists, are drawn to Wicca because of its reverence for earth and nature. Moreover, many believe that teenagers and young adults gravitate to Wicca because it places such a strong emphasis on the role and power of women, self-empowerment, and spiritual growth.

Conclusion

Modern-day Wicca finds its roots in pre-Christian pagan religions. With an emphasis on maintaining harmony with nature, karma, self-empowerment, and spiritual growth, Wicca's popularity continues to grow. However, many hold the mistaken belief that Wicca is satanism or a cult.

There are no hard and fast rules in Wicca. Many Wicca traditions exist today whose practices and rituals differ. However, all seem to adhere to the Wiccan Rede and most seem to have their foundation in Gardnerian Wicca.

Colors are energy! They are waves of light that are absorbed or reflected by the surface that they interact with, because of this they have their own energy and are useful in spell casting.

Science has proven that colors can affect our moods, help in healing and have a great impact on people in various other ways.

That is why you may notice some spells call for candles or fabric of a certain color, usually these color represent the work you aim to do.

For some people, certain colors may have a personal meaning, but usually we can all agree on the universal meaning each color represents. How to make a magick circle and altar:

Magick circles and altars have been used since the beginning of time .The were widely used by the ancient Babylonians. Most pagan rituals take place in a circle, outside, under the moon.  One can simply look to Stonehenge from proof of this. 

Today the circles have taken on more of a personal shape, often times they are quickly put together and dismantled, perhaps a practice used at a time in history when being a witch or pagan would lead to death.

Today’s’ magick circles perform two functions, they function as a sort of protection against evil or harmful energy and also create a sacred space for one to commune with their god or goddess.

​

The magick circle is put together using one’s own energy ti create this sacred space.  It is essential for many spells, especially love spells.   It is a sphere of energy that surrounds the caster on all sides, protecting them from harm and creating a sacred place for the rituals to take place.

​

THE CIRCLE AND ALTAR:

To help visualize, mark out a circle on the ground, it doesn’t need to be huge, should should provide you with enough room to move around in.  I suggest using a long rope or extension cord to mark the area, if you are outside you can draw a line in the dirt or use chalk if you have some.

You can also use other items to make the circle.  When creating my magick circle for love spells I prefer to lay flower petals around the edge (I have a bag of dried ones I just pick back up when I’m done). You can use rocks, crystals, anything really.  Try to find something you have a personal connection with or like.

Wiccan Ritual Tools

There are certain tools that most every Wiccan has and uses in their rituals.  Because the majority of spells we talk about are Wiccan in nature, these ritual tools are often required.  If you can not get these tools you can always be creative and use something similar to represent it.

Athame -  A short (usually around 5 or 6 inches) double edged, usually dull blade that represents the God. They typically have a black handle.  Some people prefer to use wooden athames carved from trees.

Chalice – A cup of mug used to represent the Goddess.  This usually contains wine or water when on the altar and is also related to the Element Water.  It is used in a ritual called the great right which symbolizes the unification of the male and female.

Cauldron – Used to symbolize the womb of the Goddess, used for cooking and burning incense.

Book of Shadows – Think of this as your magickal journal.  Write down anything you do or learn that has to do with your workings.

Incense – Represents the Element Air and is also used to cleanse magickal tools and places.

Pentagram – Associated with the Element Earth, it is placed on the altar to provide protection during rituals and spell casting.

Wand – Usually associated with the Element Fire.  It is used to direct energy.  It can be made from any material and can even be as simple as a branch or twig from a tree.

These are the very basic ritual tools of Wiccans.  Like magickal tools they should be extremely well taken care of and guarded.  You should view your ritual tools as sacred. Try to find items that have a personal connection with you, it will help to strengthen your workings.

There are a lot of other magickal tools and ritual tools that are used, from bells to Tarot cards and pendulums.  It all depends on the magickal work you intend to do and what you personally find useful.

Poppet Magick and Healing Spells

When many of us think of magick dolls images of a voodoo witch doctors are conjured in our minds.  This stereotypical thought has kept many people from enjoying the benefits and strength that poppet magic has. 

The fact is, voodoo, at its core, is about healing and love.  It is how it has been portrayed in the media that gives people a negative image of it.  It is interesting to learn that poppet magick isn’t solely used in voodoo, it has often been used in witchcraft and Wiccan rituals throughout time.

Healing Spells – Poppet Magick How To

Gather some fabric, the type doesn’t matter, but the color should be in line with your goal (check out the “Colors and Magick” section of this site).

You will also need a needle and thread (sorry, the fairies aren’t going to sew this for you).

You can use whatever you’d like to stuff the poppet, scraps of cloth and cotton work great.

Once you have the majority of the stuffing in I recommend adding some herbs or flowers that add power to your spell.  Crystals and stones also work well.

If you are making the poppet for someone else add a piece of cloth, some hair or fingernail clippings for that person if available.  You can also put a small picture inside to achieve the same effect.

​

After you are done making the poppet it must be cleansed and purified.  Pass it through the smoke from your incense and add a couple drops of salt water to do this.

Once the poppet is put together and cleansed say the following-

,“With this spell put inside,

,it’s intention shall not hide.

,Let this poppet do it’s work for me,

,Sealed with a spell, so mote it be.”

,REMEMBER – THIS POPPET REPRESENTS YOU OR THE PERSON YOU HAVE MADE IT FOR, TAKE CARE OF IT AND KEEP IT SAFE!

Undoing the Magick -

When the work is done and you no longer wish for the effects of the poppet’s magick, simply take it apart. While you take it apart say the following words:

,“I cast this spell at the start,

,No it’s time for the work to part”.

Like I stated above, this poppet represents the person you made it for, please take great care and be gentle even when taking it apart.  Once you have the poppet apart you must bury the pieces in a safe place.

Visualize to Create Your Perfect Mate

This simple exercise will help you visualize to create your perfect mate.  It may seem very simple, but we can never underestimate the power of positive thought and energy.

1. Focus your energy and imagine your perfect mate in your mind’s eye. Focus and concentrate on this image for as long as you can maintain. Visualize your feelings flowing out of you and into the universe. This will attract your perfect mate to you.

2. Gather pictures of things that are important to you.  They don’t have to be the exact picture, but should represent that idea to you.  Place these pictures in your spell box or any other place for safe keeping.

3. Using your ritual pen and special paper, write down everything that is important for you to have a satisfying relationship.

4. Place this list on top of you spell box and put them both somewhere you will see them often.  The more you focus on your desire the close it comes to reality. 

5. Repeat your list often, both in your head and out-loud.  The more you put the energy and vibrations out there the quicker they will manifest.

Pink Candle Free Love Spell

This simple free love spell is so easy anyone can cast it!. You only need two things, and if you don’t already have them in your house you can easily get them at any store. This spell will give you a boost in confidence and is sure to raise your level of attractiveness to the opposite sex.

You only need -

,1 pink candle and a bottle of 100% virgin olive-

What you do: Put the candle on your altar – a table or any flat surface will work if you don’t have an altar. Coat your hand in olive oil and brush your fingers on the middle of the candle going up, then going down. You are purifying the candle with the olive oil,  so be sure to visualize the love and energy you want to charge the candle with.  Imagine this flowing from your fingers into the candle with each pass.

Do this until you feel the candle is pure and charged with your desire.  When you are done, carve what you want or the name of your lover into the candle.

Next light the candle. Focus on the flame, watch it dance and jump with the energy you charged it with.  

Pass the love you desire and want into the flame and let it be sent out into the universe.

Make sure you are comfortable and do this until the flame is completely out.
